Ongoing wireless problems, how do I solve it?

I have an Advent 5311, I have only ever used it as a word processor and for internet research at uni, but the integrated wireless is terrible. I literally have to be right next to the router for it to work, there isn't much point in having it. Everyone else where I live has no problems it has to be the computer. Any suggestions on what I can do to immediately improve my wireless range?
