What could be wrong with 1996 plymouth breeze, that check engine light comes on?

I have a 1996 plymouth breeze. It will run good, nice and quiet, no noises or knocks. but after about 5-15 minutes it just dies out. And will not start again for 20-30 minutes. The check engine light comes on, but i live in a small town and no one has a diagnostic for it. There have also been problems with the electrical system, not sure if they are related or not. The cruise control no longer works and the stereo has a mind of its own, will turn its self on and off and up and down. Is there anyway to find out what is the matter with it?
